I love helping first graders express themselves through writing. For me, the first semester of first grade is all about creating a safe environment for them to feel comfortable putting their thoughts down on paper. We work on all the different ways to incorporate written expression into our day.
I am finally sitting down to share some new items from a workshop that I recently attended.
I know some states do not follow them, but we began our journey about 3 years ago. We didn't have much training and we were kind of thrown into it! I have a feeling many of you are in the same boat. As in many new educational undertakings we are given a task and we do our best to go with it. We don't have the materials or resources, just a mandate to "get it done".
It can be so frustrating! One of the biggest challenges at my school was the writing component of Common Core. There are not that many standards, but sometimes we interpret them so differently.
Within our grade level we had different ideas. Our district has not adopted a writing curriculum and we have no updated materials or Common Core rubrics. Well this past week I attended a district wide training on creating writing rubrics aligned to Common Core.
It was a two day workshop where I collaborated with other 2nd grade teachers district wide. Again we were not given the rubric we were asked to create rubrics that aligned from K We were however given some resources.
We looked at several online resources, but the following had great rubrics for their school districts.
Using these sites as a guideline we sat down and got to work on our own. This is what we came up with. There is a rubric for each strand of writing and the Language Skills rubric goes with all of them.

I just didn't want to add it 3 different times. What we were using before was so general that I feel like these make it much more clear and easy to break down each part of the writing.
These are definitely not "Kid Friendly" but it is a place to start to really see how my kids are doing in their writing and what I need to work on teaching.
